Becoming Orthodox

While reading about Orthodox Christianity or watching Youtube videos can be helpful, there’s no substitute for visiting an Orthodox church to experience the Church’s worship and communion. As Philip said to Nathaniel, “Come and see” [John 1:46]. By attending one of our services, what you may have learned beforehand will “come alive” as you encounter the church as the worshipping People of God.

You might begin by attending a Vespers service on a Saturday evening. The service is shorter (about an hour long) and gives you a good introduction to the joy, beauty, and solemnity of our worship. When you visit, feel free to introduce yourself to Father Christopher or any of us parishioners. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have!

We also periodically offer inquirers and catechumen classes for those who are exploring Orthodoxy but are not yet sure they want to join the Church. In the fall of 2025, we’ve begun a new series for catechumens, but anyone is welcome to attend.

If you grow into the conviction that Orthodox Christianity is the fullness of Truth as revealed in Jesus Christ and want to become a member of Holy Cross, let Father Christopher know. He will invite you into a period of instruction and spiritual formation called catechesis. You become a catechumen when you begin this process of catechesis which eventually leads to your reception into the Church. This can take time—perhaps a year or more, depending on a variety of circumstances—and should not be rushed.

This period of instruction, discernment and spiritual formation also gives you time to practice an Orthodox way of life and get to know us better. It is crucial to learn what the Church teaches and begin to acquire an “Orthodox mindset” but it is equally important to grow in your love for God and the People of God. As Saint Paul reminds us, “we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12:5; see also Ephesians 4:25).

If, after living an Orthodox way of life and completing the catechumen classes, you and Father Christopher agree that there are no impediments to membership, you will be joyfully welcomed into the Church through baptism and/or chrismation and, in the company of the faithful, continue our shared journey towards communion with God!
